Must-haves for every student home

‘Borrowed’ traffic cones aside, what do you need at home for your first semester at uni and beyond? At Circuit, we’ve pulled together a few of the student digs essentials we wouldn’t go without.

Home-sweet-home comforts

The best thing about bagging your own room at uni is that only you get to decide what to do with it. Well, within reason. But the point is, it doesn’t have to cost the earth to deck out your new space with lamps, plants, cushions and rugs that speak to what you like.

And there’s nothing wrong with bringing a little bit of ‘back home’ with you, either. Why not treat yourself to a fancy candle? Or invest in a box of your all-time favourite teabags?

Make a checklist (or use this one)

Most students have to fit their belongings in a fairly small car. So unless you’re bringing the drum kit – which might cause its own controversy – it’s good to have a handle on what’s essential and what’s not. Here’s where we’d start:

Student bedroom essentials

  • Duvet and pillows
  • Blankets
  • Bed sheets
  • Alarm clock

Bathroom essentials

  • Towels and bath mat
  • Shower curtain
  • Rubber duck
  • Cleaning stuff
  • Toothbrush

Kitchen essentials

  • Pots and pans
  • Plates and cutlery
  • Mugs and glasses
  • Recipe books (maybe get your home favourites written down!)

Desk essentials

  • Notepads and pens
  • Spare notebook for doodling
  • Post-it notes
  • Desk calendar

Plus anything else you love

Whether it’s gadgets and gizmos or a cool record collection, don’t be afraid to show off what makes you, well, you. (Unless it really is a drum kit…) Our stuff doesn’t always show who we really are, but it does often kick-start conversations. And when you’re meeting new people, that’s no bad thing at all.
